We always hear children saying that Mathematics is the hated subject for them. Many children score really low marks in maths and as a result parents have to arrange special tuition for their child in maths. But in a different scenario we also know children scoring full marks in maths that too without any assistance from tuitions. So we cannot say that maths is a daunting task for children. So why most students hates maths more.
Some may say maths is tough to learn ,and some others say maths is boring
Let's see what can be the real reason behind the hatred towards maths.
1. Not knowing the basics
Yes, this is the first reason of hatred towards maths from the lower classes itself. Not only in CBSE but also in ICSE and state syllabus schools, children are taught the basics of mathematics in the lower classes. Without learning the basics well, they cannot understand the maths lessons in the higher classes. Maths syllabus is designed in way that children have to face more complex maths problem as they get to higher classes which cannot be done without knowing the basics that they need to learn in the lower classes.
For eg: A child is taught addition and subtraction in the lower classes. But afterwards in the next level they have to do the simplifications using the Bodmas rule. Here if a child is not well versed in addition and subtraction in the lower classes he cannot do the simplification in the higher classes.
2. No stories to be taught
Another interesting reason behind the hatred towards maths is the way of teaching mathematics. We know in other subjects like science , topics can be taught in a storytelling way that create a space for the child to get into the topic with his own imaginations and dreams regarding the topic which makes the subject more interesting for the child to understand, rather than by hearting it. But in the case of mathematics there is no stories for the teachers to share with the students, there are only some formulas, theorems, and more complex mathematical procedures which tends the student's mind to get diverted and engage in some other things like drawing on the last page of the notebook, on the desk and many other things they like.
3. Syllabus matters
In India we have many syllabuses that schools follow such as CBSE, ICSE, state syllabus prepared by each state. Here if we are analysing each syllabus we get to know that some are far ahead from others in case of the portions they add to each classes. Many state syllabus add less portions for children to study so that more children get passed. But in ICSE we see the portions are really tough and students get hard to score good marks in the exam. Syllabus should be made according to the age of the child. Especially in the case of maths complex portions have to be added in the high school classes rather than in the primary and secondary levels. Because of the hardness in the portions for children to grasp the topic many children get annoyed with maths. CBSE syllabus can be considered as an ideal one for children which is not much easier and not much harder.
4. Maths teachers
As we discussed before on the way of teaching mathematics which can be boring sometimes, is highly related with the type and ability of the teacher. If the teacher can teach mathematics in an enthusiastic way by which the class becomes live and active there is only a less chance of hate towards maths as the children are comfortable and more interested towards the topic.
This has to be done as a foundation, that is in the primary levels of school education where the basic mathematics is taught. Rather than finishing the portions in time, teachers should be more concerned for the students getting better understanding of the topic they teach. But practically it never happen and hence parents have to arrange special tuitions for the students and unfortunately in tuitions also the same thing happen because when the classes are crowded , the teachers are not able to give special attention to each child.
But now as the technolgy advances students have many online educational sites such as schoolessons.com where online teachers takes care of each students by giving special attention to each student in doubt clearing, solving problems, helping in projects/ assignments etc specially for CBSE students.
5. Memory problem
Most of the students have memory problems affecting their studies. But mainly maths is the one subject giving more headaches for students as they need to recollect the equations, theorems, graphs, exponential, calculus, logarithms, sequences and many more which can be hard for children to memorize. Also in solving the problem there can be different way, but the child need to remember the way he was taught by the teacher in class to get the full marks. Each step included in solving the problem need to be written in the answer sheet to impress the teacher.
So finally we can conclude that mathematics is not the enemy of the students, but the way of teaching, the order of teaching, the attitude of the teachers and similar things matters the most. Every Child possess the abilities to grasp and score better marks in maths if taught and nurtured in the right way. Mathematics is the base of all subjects and need to be applied in every instance of our daily life. Mathematics is the base of all subjects and need to be applied in every instance of our daily life.
